Road Trips with Chip : April (1)

middle school’s secret garden

I began the month driving into northwest Daegu for more cherry blossom views. I truly cannot get too many floral views in my life. I even arrived to school a few minutes early, somedays, to have peaceful studying time sitting on a bench under the blossomed trees.

Yuksinsa & Dodongseowon

I returned temple I visited back in winter of 2021. Back then, I didn’t know what to expect, and made the mistake of exploring one very cold, windy day. The taxi driver I finally had to order, said winter springtime was the best time to go there. So, I finally returned this April.

As I walked up the stairs to the temple, there was a huge cherry blossom tree. There was a loud buzzing coming from the tree. I climbed as close as I could and saw hundreds of bees working hard collecting pollen.

I then drove an hour south to Dodongseowon Confucian Academy.

Palgongsan

Mid-April, my friend A and I went for a hike up Palgongsan, the highest mountain in Daegu. Although I felt like I was on the verge of death every 5 steps, A was an amazing cheerleader and pep-talker. She helped me make it clear to the top, where the stone Buddha is. We sat on a rock ad enjoyed a healthy picnic of vegetables and tuna.

We then, ventured down the opposite direction, thinking we would have an easier path returning to the car. As we decided not to climb more, we went too far downhill, hoping to grab a taxi. Alas, no taxis would drive out that far. We were stranded, walking and exhausted for a good hour, before a bus finally appeared and kindly stopped for us. We finally made it back to the car, and drove back to Daegu.

For now, here are some random views from Gachang

    1. You would love Korea, then! So many mountains, and hiking is a very common activity here. I much prefer the flatter lands for strolling.. but the mountain top views are wonderful!

  1. Peaceful scenes…..I can understand why you would return.

The Academy was stunningly manicured, yet no people. Were people around?

I applaud your climbing Palgongsan. What an achievement to climb, then enjoy your picnic with breathtaking views.

Meredith, Brian, and I climbed a mountain near our CA home; however, we missed the trail! Our path was torturous and somewhat fearful; at the top as we found ice hiding under the tiny sprouting plants! We found a road down the mountain, began walking, and gratefully accepted a ride from a family driving a car. I haven’t climbed a mountain since then…

Looks like humor for middle schoolers is somewhat universal! I love you and I am very proud of you. Aunt Kathy
