Seoul Journey: Gyeongbokgung Palace

Thursday, Part 2

My Thursday journey continued to Gyeonbukgong Palace, an approximate 15 minute walk from the village. For 3,000 Won (around $2.50) I was able to enter the palace, observing the many various buildings which played very specific roles in maintaining palace operations. This is the first (and largest) of 5 main royal palaces located in Seoul built during the Joseon Dynasty. I hope to return in the spring to experience the beauty of the gardens, as well as see the other 4 palaces. They are painted in bright colors and have intricate designs all throughout. It would be very hard to not feel happiness as you take in the sites.

I was also able to observe the Changing of the Guard ceremony. This was approximately 15 minutes of colorful uniforms, trumpets and drums, steeped in ceremonious choreography as the captains inform inspections of the guards.
